There are
eight main parts of speech. We will discuss briefly about each one.
NOUN -
(Naming the words)
It is the
name of a person, place, thing or an idea.
Some examples
of nouns are:
Persons: Daniel, Smith, Elizabeth, Laura
Place: London, New York, West Virginia,
Things: table,
pen, clock, Bag
Ideas: happiness, hope, sorrow, Joy
PRONOUN -
(Replacement of a Noun)
A pronoun is
word that is used in the place of a noun or noun phrase to avoid repetition of
that noun or noun phrase.
Some examples
of pronouns are I,
you, we, they, he, she, it, me, us, them, him, her, this, those and their atc.
Exemplary
sentences for the concept of pronouns: Laura is tired. She wants to sleep. I want her to
work with me. In these sentences She, I, her and me are pronouns
which are used in the place of nouns.
ADJECTIVE
- (Defining a word)
It is a word
that describes, modifies or provides more information about a noun or
pronoun. Simply we can say that an adjective defines noun or pronoun.
Examples
of adjectives: big,
good, bad, happy, sad, green, yellow, young, old, fun, crazy, naughty
Exemplary
sentences of adjectives: The little boy had a black hat. He is a good
boy. He is crazy and intelligent. In these sentences black, good,
crazy and intelligent are adjectives.
VERB -
(Action showing Word)
A verb
is a word which shows an action or state. A verb always shows that what
someone or something is doing at a specific time.
Examples
of verb: go, ask, speak,
run, pull, eat, play, live, cut, walk, have, like
Exemplary
sentences of verb:
He likes English books. I study my books and play games
at home. In these sentences the words like, study and play show an action so these
are verbs.
ADVERB -
(Describing the verb)
An adverb
is a word that defines or modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
Adverbs is a word that tells us how, where, when, how often or to what extent.
Frequently adverbs end in –LY.
Examples
of adverbs: slowly,
fast, quietly, very, always, bravely, never, too, honestly, well
Exemplary
sentences of adverbs:
He is usually busy. I ate my lunch quickly
yesterday. He is going to his duty slowly. In these sentences the word
usually, quickly and slowly are adverbs.
PREPOSITION
- (Showing the State)
A preposition is
a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun to any other word.
They can indicate time, place, or relationship. They show the state of a noun
or pronoun.
Examples
of prepositions: at,
up, on, down, in, from, before, with, near, beneath, between, about
Exemplary
sentences of prepositions: The cat is under the table. I left keys on the
table for you. He is coming behind me. In these sentences the
word under, on and behind are prepositions.
CONJUNCTION
- (Joining the words or sentences)
A conjunction is
a word that joins two words, ideas, phrases or clauses together in a sentence.
It shows how they are connected. Simply we can say that it provides a mutual
junction.
Examples
of conjunctions:
and, that or, but, which, because, so, yet, unless, since
Exemplary
sentences of conjunctions: I was happy and excited due to the victory of my
team in match. He was late because he gets up late in the morning. It is
a book which provides me complete details about English language. In
these sentences the word and, because and which are conjunctions.
INTERJECTION
- (Expressing the words)
An interjection is
a word or phrase which expresses sudden feelings or emotions.
Examples
of interjections:
Ouch! Hurrah! Wow! Great! Oops! Help! Oh! Hey! Hi! Ah!
Exemplary
sentences for interjections: Wow! I passed my math test. Great! You have done. Ouch! That shoe hurts my feet.
